During this month, I have been making a bigger effort to discuss ovarian cancer, warning signs and awareness with anyone and everyone that asks. This isnt much different from any other month of the year but I have noticed that September puts me in high gear to spread awareness. I have met many people this month that have battled, or had a loved one battle cancer (all kinds). I have met many others that are currently in the battle with cancers of all kinds. Just a side note, I struggle sometimes for the right words (are you shocked?!). I say battle but does that mean there has to be a winner and a loser? A friend said to me...anyone that faces cancer at any stage and keeps their sense of humor, and their drive to live is a winner! Therefore, I struggle with the word battle...I use it but I dont think that there is a winner and a loser in this battle. I think it is just that...a fight with something awful and pretty darn evil (now back to the real story) On the good news front... I did hear positive news out of Stanford this week that they have found a protein that will now go into human trials to slow down the spread of ovarian cancer and breast cancer. It has worked on mice thus far, so I say, bring it on to the humans!! Praying that it is successful. A protein that enhances good cells...not a chemo that kills good cells as well as bad. A protein that does not make you sick to take it. Now THAT is some really good news!! I have to admit, this has been a really tough month for me over all. I am not sure why but when I reflect on the people that I have spoken to and that have shared their stories I think that I have just been frustrated that we cannot do a better job of finding a cure for cancer. We had the honor of attending the Sutter Pediatric remembrance this month too and it is always an emotional night. When the pictures of these kids hit the screen and the messages from their families are read...I feel like the hole in my heart opens up just a little more. But with that hole, comes also a peace of knowing that Tay is in Heaven with some of the most amazing angels. That evening we released butterflies in honor of our loved ones and of course Taylors, flew off quickly to its next adventure. It was not a surprise!! :) So again, through difficulty comes healing! My goal is to end ovarian cancer awareness month with good news and the news out of Stanford is a great start to the wind down of September. We will have good news in regards to funds distribution as well. Announcement will be made on Monday!
