I remember a few years about going over Descartes argument that because we can imagine not having a body and still having a mind this in some way distinguished them. My lecturer responded that we can imagine all kinds of things, and that imagination didnt have any baring on the facts, for example we can imagine some unsolved mathematical equation/theorem being either true or false, but it must be one or the other. This seems like quite obviously a false analogy, we cant really imagine an unsolved mathematical equation being true or false unless we understand the equation fully, and so understand it to be true or false. However we dont understand an unsolved equation fully. How would you respond to Descartes? or my lecturer?
