During this morning’s appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, the Governor spoke as if life in Indiana was something to envy and that is was all thanks to more than a decade of Republican leaders who worked across the aisle to make things happen. Hoosiers know better. Our state is 50th in personal income growth, but first in creating poverty-level jobs. We have a poor “quality of life” (44th) and a high number of foreclosures (8th) because many do not earn a true living wage. Furthermore, Statehouse Republicans have worked systematically over the last decade to defund and dismantle education in our state – the key investment we need to make in Indiana’s future. They slashed more than $300 million from the budget and never restored it and refuse to fund all-day kindergarten. Recently, Governor Pence suddenly pulled the plug on efforts for Indiana to apply for an $80 million federal grant to expand Indiana’s Pre-K program. And let’s not forget CECI, his puppet education organization created to circumvent the authority of an elected official who happens to be a Democrat. Meanwhile, Democrats’ calls for increasing the minimum wage, implementing universal Pre-K, making college more affordable, and investing in better workforce training programs have fallen on deaf ears. Do not let Governor Pence’s rhetoric fool you. Indiana has real problems and needs serious problems solvers – people who will make long-term investments in our state, not just band-aid solutions for political gains. Unfortunately, that’s how the Governor and other Statehouse Republicans have governed over the last decade. You can see where that’s gotten us. Hoosiers deserve better.
