During times of injustice, oppression and inequality one of the greatest and most effective tools of the populace is to express their displeasure through protests or demonstrations. An unmistakable sign of unity and resistance that can not be ignored, has the power to not only make positive change but can also topple the forces that strive to be the oppressors. But for any movement to have positive ramifications the actions taken by the resistors can not mirror those of who they are standing up against. The Peaceful protests that gained popularity in the sixties have been reborn and revitalized in modern day. They have been successful in opening the eyes of a large percentage of the population about corporate greed and political corruption, about unjust laws and even unfair labor practices. There seems to be a new story every night on the evening news about some group somewhere that has had enough of being mistreated or have been witness to a plethora of heinous deeds. Now each fight is unique in and of itself, but the one thing that most have in common is that they have learnt that sometimes taking a blow for what you believe to be right and not striking back, is the best way to justify your intentions. I just wish that everyone who decided to stand up had the same mentality. Whenever a group of protesters allow their emotions and thoughts to become clouded with negativity like hatred or greed these simple demonstrations turn ugly very quickly. Any time violence, rioting and looting breaks out the individuals who desire change instantly go from being part of the solution, to a major part of the problem. They lose all credibility and respect of a large majority of the general public, they can no longer be looked upon as being spokespeople for the huddled masses who are being treated unjustly. These types of people have allowed their egos and their own greedy hearts to convince them to act in just such a way that they cause people to become distracted from the real problem by creating one that is just as terrible. Change is absolutely possible, but it can only happen when we are dedicated to achieving it through Peaceful resistance and intelligent communication. I am still a firm believer in our ability to create a better more Peaceful world for our children, but before we can caged the demons of the world, we first must caged the ones in our own hearts.
