E Pluribus Unum One from many That, my friends is our national motto. We are not a nation that was built on the idea of “every man for himself.” We have had our greatest triumphs when we worked as one community, as one nation. The brave minutemen on the Lexington green The 182 immortal heroes of the Alamo Our nation stood on self-sacrifice and the benefit of all. Together we built a nation where opportunity was obtainable for all, not just a few. Frontiersmen did not carve out a nation for themselves; they did it for family, for community. Towns would build barns together, would build roads, would build a community together, would toil, would sweat and bleed not just for their own betterment; but for their community. When we noticed an injustice, we were inspired to right it, to stand up for the greater morality. From Lexington Massachusetts, to San Jacinto... to Selma Alabama… we stood for moral reasons, fought for moral reasons… died for each other. Built for each other. Lived for each other. We waged wars on poverty, not on the impoverished. WE stood up to eradicate illiteracy, not deny education to others. We opened our hearts and our doors to new comers. No we demanded they strive for the American dream… We in a proud voice proclaimed “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. “ We did not build fences, did not turn away those that suffered. Together, we reached for the stars, eradicated disease, won world wars. Wrote laws, and repealed laws based on human dignity. We were a community. We were great. Now you and I have to fight to regain our greatness. We now reward greed. We now pat on the back those that put gold above good; that puts credit over compassion. Seemingly we have lost our way and we have to get back on the right path, you and I have to work to make America the land of opportunity for all. WE must make it work. WE can make it work In an America that works, anyone that is willing to work hard, should be able to walk through the door of success that leads to a better life. Unfortunately for many the door had been slammed shut, and without the help of our friends, our neighbors, our communities, that door remains tightly closed, and the dreams of the other side remain nothing more than a dream we long or. It is up to us as a community to kick open that door and to march proudly on through. But, we as Americans that can open that door have a responsibility… For the Americans that struggle at the door, we must turn around, and reach out our hand. For the single mother that struggles to provide…. We must reach out our hand For the immigrant that wants to realize the dream of this great land…. We must reach out our hand For the sick and the infirm that struggle for affordable health care, we must reach out our hand. For those students that seek a good education to allow them to break the shackles of poverty and neglect, we must reach out our hand. For all in this great land that struggle needlessly, who toil in the land of milk and honey, we must reach out our hand. WE must reach out our hand and help them through the door. We must help our neighbor. Those of us that have tasted success, have lived the dream, must NEVER turn our backs as we walk through the door. Instead we that have walked the path through the door must reach back and help others come through the door. WE can do no less. Many thanks to Michael Cole for Congress
