E-votion October 16 Hebrews 8:6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises (English Standard Version). If you think like I do, you would also find it rather profound that God can have better promises. Every promise God makes is trustworthy, effectual, and prophetic. So, how can any promise be better than that? Hmmmm......Well, I see this verse talking about promises pertaining to the priesthood. How about we make a short list of some things that makes these better promises? The Old Covenant was based on God selecting a flawed priest from flawed humanity who had to first atone for his own sins. The former high priests used the blood of animals that simply transferred guilt, and temporarily covered transgressions. And finally, the first testament was sealed in symbols of the flesh rather than substance in the Spirit. The ministry of Christ is a more excellent ministry for many more reasons. We now have the privilege of not just serving God, but knowing God. Sonship opened the door to a relationship with God that was previously unheard of. Children of God have become heirs of God because of the excellent sacrifice of the Son of God. Our perfect High Priest is truly the more excellent way, and the Mediator of a better covenant based on better promises! Elder S R Henderson, Pastor
