EAST Community Transport in Newham has secured a limited amount of funding that enables us to offer Category D1 training at no cost. Category D1 is the specific driving licence category which covers minibuses with 9 to 16 passenger seats. Category D1 entitlement was included on UK Driving Licences for those who passed their driving test before the end of 1996; since the beginning of 1997 the D1 Category has been subject to a separate DVLA driving test and for which specific driver training is strongly recommended. Whilst it is possible to drive some minibuses with Category B entitlement most minibuses are significantly above the weight limit permitted under this category. Commercial provision of Category D1 training, together with the DVLA driving test can cost well in excess of £1,000. The DVLA test standard for this category is very strict because it relates to the conveyance of passengers in safety. As a consequence, individuals attempting to pass this test without proper training are likely to be disappointed with the outcome.
