ECUMENICAL, ECUMENISM An ecumenical movement promotes unity among diverse Christian bodies. Ecumenical movements in recent years have attempted to unite several Protestant denominations, or to reunite the Roman Catholic church and the Anglican church. The National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA and the World Council of Churches promote ecumenism. The great church councils of the fourth and fifth centuries are called ecumenical councils because they represented all of Christendom. The Roman Catholic church uses the term ecumenical council for additional councils (including the Council of Trent and Vatican II) that are not accepted by Christianity composed of Protestants or the Eastern Orthodox church as being ecumenical. This is a danger of teaching false doctrines to the Body of Christ, negating the Bible as the sole source of doctrine. God Save the World, Inc.
