Thank you Edmonton! K-Days 2013 a huge success as memories are made and traditions relived With a new name, enhanced programming and plenty of nostalgia, Edmonton’s largest summer festival travelled from back then to ‘Now Playing’ for 10 days full of music, rides, food and shopping! More than 781,743 came out to enjoy the first ever K-Days. “We said before, K-Days was more than a name. Our community told us they wanted a summer festival they could call their own,” said says Richard L. Andersen, CFE, President and CEO of Northlands. “We understood that the name Capital EX did not resonate with our community and by renaming the fair, we wanted to provide Edmontonians the chance to re-engage in their summer fair,” says Andersen. “We’ve heard from many Edmontonians that this year’s fair was the best yet and are thrilled that our community is so engaged in the festival they hold near and dear to their hearts.” Music revelers young and old travelled south this year to the K-Days entertainment destination on the midway. Complete with the brand new Koodonation Stage, Rib Fest and the Boardwalk Beach and Beer Gardens, the K-Days south grounds was a 10-day kaleidoscope of entertainment experiences! Music fans enjoyed world-class performances each night by Burton Cummings, Carly Rae Jepson, Classified, Down With Webster, The Tea Party, Dragonette, Colin James and more! For those whose ‘K’ means Klondike, old memories and traditions were relived at Klondike Park with the return of Klondike Kate, gold panning and the Klondike Express. Our 19th century oasis nestled in the 21st century midway proved to be a hit among fairgoers. Many prospectors struck it rich at this year’s Chilkoot Gold Mine, but one lucky fairgoer found a diamond engagement ring in her gold pan! Inside the 522,000 square feet of the Edmonton EXPO Centre, fairgoers were treated to brand new attractions and exhibits. This year, we celebrated our love of cold weather sports in the comfort of our summer heat with the Sports Hall Experience – complete with interactive games and historical displays. Over 5220 people came down to sign the Olympic Card and with Northlands donating one dollar for every signature including individual donations, $6140 dollars were raised for KidSport Edmonton! Just down the hall in Our Alberta, fairgoers took a road trip throughout our beautiful province without ever having to leave the city limits! What’s a fair without some magic and mystique? This year’s WestJet Feature Live Show, Mana, brought illusionists, flame eaters, contortionists and record attendance inside Hall D! As a community service organization, Northlands is dedicated to giving back to local charity groups. This year, 4-H Alberta, Kids Up Front Edmonton, Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS) and Boy & Girls Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area were partnered with four world-class ribbers inside of Rib Fest – each receiving $1000 dollars for their participation. As winners of the Rib Fest People’s Choice contest, Boss Hogs’ community partner YESS received an additional $1000 dollars! At the 36th annual Monday Morning Magic, more than 1,600 children with disabilities, their families and local heroes enjoyed an early visit to the K-Days grounds on Monday, July 22 from 9 a.m. – noon. With the help of the Edmonton Eskimos, University of Alberta Golden Bears, Edmonton Rush, RCMP and more, this year’s Monday Morning Magic helped create lasting smiles on the faces of many deserving children! As the backbone of Northlands, our events would not be a success without our dedicated volunteers. Over 500 Northlands volunteers filled over 2318 shifts to make lasting memories for K-Days fairgoers.
