EDWARD MOATE 1884 Quite an intriguing case of mistaken identity, Edward Moate or James Grot was brought from Bright where he had been working for the late Dr Warren. After the doctors assign Edward was found in he garden late doctors praying incoherently for him and was under the belief that he himself was indeed God almighty. shortly after he was charged with Lunacy and committed to the male division of the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum on the 24th of July 1884 suffering religious mania. Upon initial examination it was determined that Moate was a woman and she was transferred across to the female wards where she remained until her death on the 5th of march 1887. Despite her actual gender being revealed this patient who was once married to a butcher in Ballarat and then divorced before coming to be employed by the Doctor is buried in the Beechworth Cemetery as Edward Moate in an unmarked grave.
