EIGHTEEN INCHES From Head to Heart David A. Rice Broad is the road to destruction and many there are who travel there... “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” To believe in your heart, aye theres the rub. So many believe in their heads, confess with their mouths and continue on their merry way to Hell. If you believe in your heart, everything changes... everything. For head believers, a few things may change... they may abandon the Night Clubs and party at church instead but nothing really changes. The head believers religion is self-centered... God Bless me and mine, God, heal me, God give me a big house, God, I need a new car... Head believers excuse sin, live in sin, ask God to overlook and accept their sin. Head believers rebuke the Devil when God convicts of sin. Head believing Preachers pick out all the verses about blessing, healing and offerings... especially offerings... they fill churches with head believers who make huge offerings in the hope of a hundred-fold blessing they never seem to receive and Head believing preachers become fabulously wealthy. Heart believing Preachers preach the whole Gospel. They preach Heaven without forgetting Hell, blessing without forgetting the curses. They preach holy living and they preach against sin. They preach salvation by Grace and the terrible cost of discipleship. Mostly they preach the Crosses... the Cross that Jesus bore and the cross that every believer is to take up as they follow after Jesus. Heart preachers never get wealthy... if they did, they would give it away to feed the poor. Heart believers take up their cross and follow Jesus. Heart believers bless others, expecting nothing in return. Heart believers suffer with Jesus. Heart believers are persecuted and killed for the sake of the Gospel of Christ. Heart believers pray for direction, guidance, instruction, and the power to overcome sin and live a holy and righteous life, worthy of their calling. Heart believers grieve over sin, confess sin and overcome sin. Heart believers grasp who Jesus is, what He did for them, what He saved them from and what He saved them to and they never look back. Head believers get to the Judgment full of boasting… “Look, Jesus, at all the things I did for you!” Heart believers get to the Judgment full of gratitude… “Oh, Jesus, let me see the nail scars in your hands so that I can understand what it cost you to save an unworthy wretch like me!” Jesus looks at the boasting head believer and says, “You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don’t impress me one bit. You’re out of here.” Jesus looks at the humble, grateful heart believer and says, “Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what’s coming to you in this kingdom. It’s been ready for you since the world’s foundation.”
