ELITE SENIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP There are 196 countries in the world according to most official estimates. Likewise, more than half of the nations on the planet have registered for the upcoming AIBA World Men’s Elite Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan. AIBA are anticipating a new record for participation for the Championships, the 17th in the edition since the inaugural tournament in Havana, Cuba in 1974. With the deadline for registration passed, a total of 576 boxers from 116 nations (Indian boxers will compete under the AIBA flag) have registered from Almaty 2013, an increase from Baku 2011 where 570 boxers from 113 countries participated. “We are extremely pleased with these numbers which demonstrates the growth of our competitions and AIBA as a whole”, stated Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, AIBA President. “These 2013 AIBA World Boxing Championships will be historical for many reasons and I am very much looking forward to welcoming all of you in Almaty.” The AIBA World Boxing Championships Almaty 2013 will be held at the Baluan Sholak Palace of Culture and Sports between 11 and 27 October. The nine-strong Irish squad arrived in Almaty last Sunday. The squad began a training camp on Monday. The World Championships will be organized under the new AIBA Technical Rules and AIBA Open Boxing (AOB) Competition.No headguards will be worn and bouts will be scored under the new AIBA 10-point must system.
