ENCORES AND CONCERT FAVORITES FOR STRINGS AND PIANO IN DALLAS MASSENET, SAINT-SAENS, MOZART, HINDEMITH, BACH AND MORE SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9 @ 3:00 PM In 1937, the trip from New York to Chicago by train took three days. Forty-one year old star violist and composer Paul Hindemith was a passenger. Denounced by the Nazi propaganda machine, he was now gone from his native Germany more and more. On this train, traveling to perform for the Chicago Arts Club, Hindemith did the seemingly impossible. He wrote a remarkable three-movement piece for solo viola, alternately tender and romantic and fiercely defiant, a compelling musical narrative showcasing his instrument’s tonal capabilities. And then: he gave the premier performance the evening he arrived in Chicago. Mount Vernon Music and the Mu Phi Epsilon Sunday Concert Series bring this story to life, in a program of traditional and surprising concert gems by Bach, Mozart, Saint-Saens, Debussy, and more. Hear them all from violist Ute Miller, violinist Mark Miller and pianist Ron Clinton in the J. Erik Jonsson Public Library, 1515 Young St. (across from City Hall). ADMISSION FREE. For more information call Mount Vernon Music at 903-563-3780, or visit mountvernonmusic.org.
