EVEN DAVID MOYES IS NOT A FAILURE I am not a keen follower of football. However, I am aware that July 2013 to April 2014 is an unforgettable chapter in the history of Manchester United and David Moyes. Moyes as we know took over from Sir Alex Ferguson. He celebrated his 50th birthday last year knowing he was going to coach one of the greatest football clubs in the world. Unfortunately, I don’t think he celebrated his 51st birthday in the best of spirits because he was sacked just after 10 months. During his 10 month stint at Manchester United, for the first time since 1990, the club failed to qualify for the Europa League. They also failed to defend their Premier League title and did not qualify for the EUFA Champions League for the first time since 1995-96. They ended the season in seventh place and he was sacked before the season ended. Despite all this, I dare say that David Moyes is not a failure. Failing at one coaching job does not make you a failure as a person. I agree that this was his biggest job offer and the biggest opportunity to make history but should he hang himself because he failed at Manchester? His life is bigger than this 10 month experience. Failure is not a person but an event or experience. When you fail at something, it does not make you a failure. You have failed but you are not a failure. You may fail that job interview, at that task, on that particular job, in that interview, at that relationship, that exam, at starting that new business but never accept the thought that you are a failure. In the 1st June edition of the Sunday Times, he wrote amongst other things that “Since leaving, I have received some very good offers and am tempted by one or two of them. I have not closed the door on anything and am open-minded…” Though he failed at Manchester, he has other good doors opening for him. Don’t shut down your life because you failed at something. There is something you are designed to succeed in and a place in life where you will be a resounding success. It’s Possible!
