EVERYBODY LOVES TEXAS HISTORIC EDIFICES For December 29th 2014 TRIBUTE TO COURAGE STATUE North of Huntsville, Texas (Interstate 45)– Opened in 1926 The Sam Houston “Tribute to Courage” statue on I45 near Huntsville is 67-ft. tall (plus 10-ft. base) statue. Sam Houston, celebrated political architect of Texas, towers in concrete above Interstate 45, with walking cane and snappy duds of a 19th century statesman. Stupendous Sam is touted in attraction literature as the second largest freestanding statue in the North America. Artist David Adickes, born and schooled in Huntsville, sculpted this colossal monument to the man who still inspires Texans to reach lofty heights. Last month, I featured David Adickes here on ELT as he had recently converted the old Huntsville High School into a museum of his statures and other artworks.
