EXERCISE OF THE WEEK!!! Due to poor posture and activities like prolonged sitting at the computer the upper trapezius (upper traps) can take over the role of stabilising the shoulder blade, becoming overused, sore and stiff. Coincidentally the lower trapezius (lower traps), no longer doing their job as the primary stabilisers, often become lazy and weak. This exercise may help by activating and strengthening the lower traps. 1. Lie on your stomach, place a small rolled towel under your forehead. 2. Place the hands under the hip bones, resting the elbows on the ground. 3. Draw the bottom tips of the shoulder blades down the back and inwards, activating the lower traps. Relax and repeat 10-20 times. 4. Avoid over activating the neck muscles If you are unsure whether this exercise is safe for you to perform as part of your weekly program please contact one of your friendly Exercise Physiologists to find out. Check out Daniel , one of our UQ prac students, demonstrate this exercise for you.
