EYE HAS NOT SEEN…BUT… 9…Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him. 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit… (1 Corinthians 2:9-10a) The Apostle of the Gospel of Grace, Paul, in the verse 6 of this epistle, reiterates the kind of esoteric wisdom which we possess as children of God, which is not available to those that are not saved. This wisdom is esoteric or mysterious because it is only understood by the help of the Spirit of God. The wisdom that is found only in Christ is spoken to those that are mature and skillful in the Word of righteousness. The wisdom of the world, on the contrary, avails to nothing, in the words of Apostle Paul, because they are sensual and driven by man’s insatiable lusts. It is, however, refreshing to learn that, our wisdom is sent to us by God in our spirits. This wisdom is the mystery of the power of Christ in our spirits which was hidden and ordained right from the creation of the world to manifest our glory to the world. He goes further to state that this mystery or esoteric wisdom was not known by the rulers of this age. The rulers of this age are Satan and his cohorts. It is because they were not privy to this wisdom that they crucified the Lord Jesus Christ, because had they known, they would not have crucified Him for the work of redemption of man to be complete. The result of Satan’s ignorance of this divine wisdom is that which has made it possible for rebellious man to have the chance to become partakers again of the divine nature after we lost it initially trough Adam (2 Peter 1:4). Having exhausted my attempt at the exegesis of the previous verses of the main text under discussion, I will at this point analyze the verses 9 and 10 in the light of the context of Paul’s argument. The man of God makes a categorical statement to the effect that, ordinary optical eyes have not seen, carnal ears have not perceived, and the sinful heart of the natural man has not yet conceived the goodies in God’s storehouse for His children. It is rather unfortunate to note that, this particular verse of scripture is often quoted verbatim by pulpiteers or preachers without making a sufficient attempt to dig deeper into the context and content of Paul’s words. The Apostle carefully states in the previous verses, a sharp contrast between what the natural man knows about us and what we are privileged to know about ourselves as children of the Most High. It is noteworthy that the man of God contrasts what he says in the verse 9 with the tenth verse by stating that the mysteries about our future in Christ have been revealed to us through the Spirit of God in us. He further states that it is only the Holy Spirit who knows the mind and purposes of God. If the Holy Spirit, therefore, dwells in us, then it does not matter people’s present perception about us, because we know through the Spirit what God bequeathed to us by virtue of our connection to Christ. Is it, therefore, not refreshing to know that the God we serve has made us kings and priests on this earth? (Revelation 1:6). Is it not heartwarming to learn from the scriptures that the city of God which Abraham and all the Old Testament saints looked for but never found is the city we have come to in Christ? (Hebrews 11:8-10, 13-16; 12:22-24). The world has not yet seen our present citizenship in Mount Zion, the city of God and the new life and triumphant life we enjoy. The world may look at us with disdain and ridicule but we are aware in our spirits what God has made us in Christ. Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, their minds have not yet conceived BUT we know what the world doesn’t know therefore we do not lose heart when life seems to be contrary to us.
