EYE LOUNGE ARTISTS ADDRESS CONSUMERISM AT FRONTAL LOBE GALLERY IN SEPTEMBER Phoenix, AZ, August 21, 2014 - Consumerism, an exhibit by members of the Eye Lounge Artists Collective in downtown Phoenix, is an exploration of the concept of consuming. The exhibit will be on display at the Frontal Lobe Community Space and Gallery, 1301 Grand Avenue, from September 5th - 22nd. Artist receptions will be held during the Grand Avenue Artwalk and First Friday event September 5th from 6-10pm; Third Friday September 22nd from 6-10pm; and by appointment by calling 602.391.4016. Is it something reflective of inner desires to be satisfied? Or is it simply a stimulus/response behavior loop? To be a consumer, in the way we know today, came into existence after World War 2 when the military-industrial complex turned its manufacturing might towards the American people - coupled with radio and TV for spreading the doctrine of keeping up with the Joneses. Since 9/11,consuming is touted as the best way we can show our patriotic spirit by buying American. Consumerism will continue to be a part of the modern world as China, India, and others rush to emulate Americas consumerist culture, threatening to churn the worlds resources into higher and higher mountains of last years Ipods, big screen TVs and computers. Local artist Ann Morton expresses her thoughts on being a consumer by creating a purse for the relentless consumer titled Excess. Constance Mcbrides ceramic torso, Namedropper, is an expression of the commodification of the human body. Participating artists include: David L. Bradley, Lee Davis, Paul Elliott, Daniel Funkhouser, Cherie Hutcheson, Shirley Jardine, Chris Maker, Constance McBride, Merkel Mclendon, Abbey Messmer, Ann Morton, Dianne Nowicki, Nicholas Wiesinger and Christina You-Park.
