Eagles’ Homecoming spoiled by Okemah Morris unable to stop Panther running attack in 26-6 loss By LARRY OWEN Times sports editor MORRIS - The Morris Eagles had their Homecoming Night spoiled on Friday with a 26-6 loss to the No. 9 (in Class 2A) Okemah Panthers at Eagle Stadium. After senior Amanda Lee was crowned as the 2013-14 Homecoming Queen, the Eagles took the field still in search for their first win of the season. The teams exchanged scores on their first offensive possessions of the contest, then it would be all Okemah after that, as the visiting Panthers tallied one more score in the opening quarter, then added a score in the second and a score in the third to come away with the 20-point decision. The main key of the Okemah win on Friday was the high-powered rushing attack. The Panthers ran a total of 59 plays on offense for a total of 351 yards (54-346 rushing), while Morris had 35 plays for 117 yards of total offense. In fact, the Panthers did not attempt a pass until their final two plays of the first half - both incompletions. Okemah would win the opening coin toss and elected to receive to begin the game, starting at its own 38. It would take the Panthers a total of 10 plays - all rushing - to go the 62 yards for the opening score. Marcus Jimboy would close out the opening drive with a 25-yard run at the 5:35 mark. The pass attempt on the conversion try fell incompleted to give Okemah the early 6-0 advantage. On the ensuing kickoff, Morris’ Ted Phillips would haul in the kickoff by Gus Deere at his 18, then ran all the way across the field. Once on the outside, Phillips would race 48 yards to the Okemah 34. The Eagles needed only three plays to knot the score at 6-6. Tate Milroy would keep the ball on a QB keeper for a 9-yard gain on the first play, then Alex Workman moved the football to the OHS 13 with a 12-yard run for Morris’ first 1st down of the contest. Leroy Wilson would cap off the 3-play, 34-yard drive by taking the handoff from Milroy and race to the left side of the line, just crossing the goal line for the game-tying score at 4:26 of the opening quarter. A high snap on the PAT attempt would force the Eagles to improvise and go for two on the conversion. The pass attempt was no good to leave the game tied at 6-6. Okemah started its second offensive series at its own 16 and picked up 57 yards on the very first play on a run by Randall Locust. It appeared that Locust was headed for the end zone for the go-ahead score, but Phillips would have other ideas, tackling the Panther running back at the Morris 27. Three plays later, the visitors were in the end zone with the 4-play drive ending on an 11-yard run by Tanner Britt. Locust would plow through the line for the conversion, putting the Eagles on the short end of a 14-6 margin with 2:55 remaining in the opening frame. The lone score for Okemah in the second quarter came following a Morris turnover with 5:53 left in the frame. Two plays after forcing a turnover on downs at the 6:42 mark, Derek Garcia would snare a Tate Milroy pass at the MHS 25 and return the interception 21 yards to the MHS 4 with 5:59 remaining in the first half. It would take only one play for Okemah to convert the turnover into points, as Locust crossed the goal line for the 4-yard score. The run attempt on the conversion was no good to make it a 20-6 contest at the intermission. The final score of the contest would come with 2:19 left in the third quarter when Okemah’s Andrew Banta connect with Colby Shandy on a 5-yard TD pass. The PAT kick was no good to push the Eagles’ deficit to 20 points, 26-6. Neither team reached the end zone in the fourth quarter to put the Morris squad on the short end of a 26-6 decision. The Eagles will close out their non-district schedule this coming Friday night with a trip to Bristow and a showdown with the Bristow Purple Pirates. Kickoff for Friday’s non-district finale is set for 7:30 p.m. in Bristow. --- Okemah 26, Morris 6 Oke - 14 - 6 - 6 - 0 (26) Mor - 6 - 0 - 0 - 0 (6) First Quarter Okemah - Marcus Jimboy, 25-yard run (Pass Failed); 5:35 Morris - Leroy Wilson, 13-yard run (Pass Failed); 4:26 Okemah - Tanner Britt, 11-yard run (Randall Locust run); 2:55 Second Quarter Okemah - Locust, 4-yard run (Run Failed); 5:53 Third Quarter Okemah - Colby Shandy, 5-yard pass from Andrew Banta (Kick Failed); 2:19 Fourth Quarter No Score Team Stats First Downs: Okemah 18; Morris 8 Rushing: Okemah 54-346; Morris 19-49 Passing: Okemah 1-4-0 5; Morris 8-16-2 68 Total Yards: Okemah 351; Morris 117 Penalties: Okemah 3-30; Morris 6-45 Fumbles: Okemah 2-0; Morris 1-0 Individual Stats Rushing: Tate Milroy 6-17; Leroy Wilson 3-16, TD; Tyler Jenkins 8-15; Alex Workman 1-12; Ted Phillips 1-(-11).
