Earlier I was having xrays, sitting in the ladies waiting area for my name to be called. When I sat down I noticed one other lady sitting in her johnnie look up at me nervously. Her nose and eyes were red, she was twisting and untwisting a tissue and furiously tapping her foot. I was reaching up behind my head trying to tie the last tie on my own johnnie and smiled at her when I noticed her watching me. She leaned forward and asked in a shaky voice your tattoos...are they cancer ribbons? I told her they were breast and thyroid cancer ribbons, and I sat down next to her to let her look. Without looking up she took my forearm in both hands and asked if I knew someone with cancer..I told her my mother and my sister.. After a moment she let go of my arm, and through tear filled eyes asked me if they were still living? I told her yes...my mother was first diagnosed 19 years ago and shes still very much alive, as well as my sister. She told me she had a mass...she was there for another scan to determine the next step, she was all alone and she was scared to death. I gave her a hug and as we pulled away she said she believed every person who crosses our path does so for a reason. Hearing the story of survival behind my tattoos had renewed her hope. You never know who might need your help, and it may be as simple as a smile.
