Earlier this year, the ICO established a Task Force on Diabetic Eye Care comprised of prominent ophthalmologists from all regions and defined a draft plan for an ICO initiative on diabetic eye care. The ICO asked Member societies and others to submit existing diabetic retinopathy guidelines for review by the Task Force. From these materials, the Task Force has developed a consensus on draft technical guidelines for screening, assessment, and treatment. The guidelines are being submitted to ICO Member retina subspecialty societies for review and feedback, and their responses will be incorporated by the Task Force. The Guidelines for Diabetic Retinopathy are now in their final phase, and it is anticipated that they will be disseminated by the ICO in December or January. We will then ask the leaders of ICO educational programs to assess what they can do to assure that ophthalmologists and others have the knowledge and skills they need to evaluate and treat diabetic patients. – Hugh Taylor, MD, AC, Chair, Task Force on Diabetic Eye Care
