Early exit from Plymouth after big defeat After five years of glorious top flight cricket at Kensham Park the spectre of relegation looms closer after the side’s capitulation at Plymouth where they went down to an eight wicket defeat with their fate being sealed shortly after tea! Batting first on a belter of a sunny day in Plymouth wickets sadly tumbled all too often. Openers Dan Hardy and Jackson Thompson were parted with 18 on the board with Hardy caught for seven and Thompson followed soon after for a knock of 20 when he was bowled. Skipper Tim Piper was next to go, also bowled for 14 and he was followed swiftly by Joe Webb for two. Maher was standing firm and he was very unlucky to fall to a catch for the team’s top score on the day of 32. Once again all hopes rested with Ross Acton coming in at number six, but when he had 18 to his name he was stumped and Will Squire was in and out, trapped leg before and the tail failed to wag with Matthew Vercoe-Curtis (5), Chris Acton (0), that his sixth blob of the term in the side – but he still tops the barrages in the 2nd XI! The final wicket to fall was that of Connor Carthew, run out by his fellow batsmen for the second frustrating week running. Paul Nott was the not out batsman with five in a hugely disappointing total of 118 all out from just 33.2 overs. The hosts needed just 17.4 overs to put the visitors out of their misery and complete an eight wicket win. Jackson Thompson (1-29 in 3.4 overs), claimed one of the wickets, his eighth of the season and the other to fall was snapped up by Ross Acton (1-26 in seven), that his 14th – Paul Nott, the teams leading wicket taker with 19 this season, finished with figures of 0-29 from four as the home batsmen wasted no time bagging the win. Will Squire (0-30 from three) was the other bowler used. The defeat, an eighth in eleven games, coupled with a surprise win for Torquay over Exeter and Cornwood bagging six points more than Bradninch with the seven they got from a six wicket last over defeat to Bovey Tracey leaves the team second bottom, 13 points above basement side Budleigh – who are at Bradninch next Saturday (July 20) and now some 16 points shy of third bottom Cornwood and 31 points adrift of fourth bottom Torquay.
