Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center expects patient surge in Ruby aftermath By Thaddeus C. Hinunangan, MD TACLOBAN, Philippines -- Early December 5, prior to Supertyphoon Rubys landfall, the Emergency Department had been receiving several patients from localities around Region 8. Patients from Abuyog District Hospital were relocated to a nearby school building in anticipation of possible storm surge. Morbid patients requiring admission and extraordinary medical support were referred to centers in Tacloban particularly Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC), the end referral in the region. EVRMC also received referrals from Schistosomiasis Hospital in Palo, Leyte Provincial Hospital, Remedios T. Romualdez Hospital, and Tacloban City Hospital. Cases ranged from thyphoid fever, pneumonia, amoebiasis, stable angina, stroke, trauma, and obsterical cases. Last year during typhoon Yolanda, EVRMC was the only functional hospital for some time during the aftermath. As Super typhoon Ruby made landfall in Dolores, Eastern Samar late December 6,2014, the hospital anticipates a rise in the number of patients from hard hit areas in Samar as well as around Leyte. Medical doctors, nurses, and allied professionals including Medical Clerks from RTR Medical Foundation are preparing to handle the patient load after the storm subsides. Contact: (0927) 669 9152
