Ebola! High school soccer player from West Africa gets taunted during Pennsylvania game A 16-year-old Pennsylvania high school soccer player from West Africa was tormented with chants of “Ebola” by opposing players, taunting that eventually led to a fight and the resignations of two rival coaches six days later. Northampton Area School District boys soccer coach Craig Carvin and his assistant, Jason Melniszyn, resigned Tuesday after the allegations of unsportsmanlike acts directed at Nazareth Area High School junior Ibrahim Toumkara, WPVI reported. There were tears coming down his eyes. He was visibly shaken by this; that it got to that level on the field, Edward Bachert, a Lehigh County police officer and Toumkara’s legal guardian the last two years, told WPVI. Toumkara’s parents still live in Guinea, one of the plague-stricken nations in West Africa. The incident took place during an Oct. 9 game between the two schools in Nazareth, Pa. Toumkara, apparently frustrated by the verbal abuse, charged a Northampton player during the second half and was ejected.Because thats not really what this is about. Were out here to work hard and play the game. Its not about playing ugly soccer, fouling a bunch. Things got really dirty; they got really ugly. Its unfortunate because we just want to see the kids play. We want a good, fair game. Literally lost all my respect for that team and its coaches, after being racist and getting a kid sent off you dont hi five your friend, a Nazareth player tweeted afterward, according to the Allentown Morning Call. Nazareth students have begun wearing #EndRacism bracelets to support Toumkara. Several Northampton students still face possible disciplinary action. They just need to learn how to give other people respect,
