“Economy is picking up steam” – Seth Terper As the saying goes when the blind man says he will throw a stone at you, chances are his leg is on a stone. So you would think Seth Terper’s leg is on a stone of actual projections of recovery to make the statement above. Yet this is his evidence for the statement above: a) “expected increases in oil and gas exploration and production” Comment: Expected for the where? These people have been telling us to expect increase in oil revenue when there has been no real investments to ensure that increase. b) “the recovery in cocoa prices” Comment: When is Ghana going to learn that we need to diversity our economy? Assuming we still want to depend on cocoa, where is investment in cocoa? How are we taking care of our farmers? Does the government know a whole generation of cocoa farmers are passing out and there is the need to invest in new ones? c) “public-private sector investments, including FDI, in key sectors of the economy, contributing to the diversification and value addition into the economy; “ Comment: Why doesn’t the ministry of trade give us actual numbers on private sector invests and FDI so we can believe in this “hot air”? d) “effective and more durable long-term public financial management systems, including GIFMIS” Comment: Awurade, this thing was started on an experimental basis by DANIDA. Has it migrated into a full project? Where is the implementation? The government has been carrying this thing around like a young man who just won the heart of a beautiful lady and yet has not raps to sustain the relationship. e) “benefits from the next generation of revenue reforms, to improve efficiency—mainly, by moving all GRA tax processes to an electronic platform in order to enhance tax administration and compliance. “ Comments: “when this government tells you about improvements in efficiency run for the border. On inflation, there are no new plans to curb inflation. On energy, same old tired promises. More to follow.
