Edinburgh City Blacks 5-8 Longniddry Villa 1999s More entertainment in one game than Hibs & Hearts have had to offer all season! Dwenn Harlem at your service. Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. The delay in sending my report to the Coach however is due to the fact that I have been partly responsible for the merging of McFly and Busted – McBusted. You can thank me later. Having only faced each other weeks before, the return fixture came a bit quicker than expected. The previous encounter had finished 6-1 to the Villa on a day they showed good shape and discipline. Whilst the outcome was the same, the Longniddry lads certainly went about it in a different way. Starting Line up; Jack MacMillian Callum Mannix Cameron White Jack Leslie Jamie Stewart Sam Stevenson Lewis Mitchell Scott Thomson Cameron Blair Innes Brown Callum Russell Sam Stevenson made his long awaited return from his horrific injury, sustained after an example of sibling rivalry gone wrong!! Still, to be tackled by your younger brother as embarrassing... Ben Muir and Johnny Pryde were both unavailable having been involved in a twitter row with the cast of Corrie... Kicking off at a ridiculously early time of 1.15pm, the cobwebs in the Villa boy’s eyes were very apparent. It took them a good while to wake up, much to the annoyance of Coach Helmn who was ranting and raving on the touchline like a baboon who just stubbed his toe. Villa did eventually take the lead though but the Villa’s coaches actions were a little distracting, so I didn’t manage to take full note of it. Callum Russell was the scorer however. Brief description – ball played across box, Russell bundled home. More great reporting from Dwenn Harlem. 0-1 The goal seemed to open the gate for more and a quick fire second followed. With Callum Russell struggling with illness, Innes Brown was moved into the central attacking role and soon after he got his first goal of the season. Lewis Mitchell broke down the right hand side of the pitch before squaring the ball across to his teammate Brown, who slotted underneath the keeper. Despite Arran Thomson’s inexplicable attempt to steal the goal, it had crossed the line and doubled Villa’s lead. 0-2 The third goal was an excellent minute period of pressure from the boys in blue and black. The move started with Arran Thomson being played through the middle. One on one with the keeper, Thomson opted to go to ground having “lost his boot”. Although there was definite contact, it was a poor decision from Thomson who gave the referee an excuse to wave play on. Nonetheless, the ball shortly after had been put over the top and Mitchell latched onto it again and coolly lobbed the keeper. 0-3 The three goal lead allowed Villa to settle but perhaps a little too much. Having conceded a corner, Villa were caught sleeping and Edinburgh City Blacks took full advantage. A quick short corner allowed their attackers to make their move before the Villa defence could react. When the cross was played in, it floated to the back post to be nodded in with ease. 1-3 Arran Thomson restored Villa’s three goal lead with a 2 yard tap in after a scramble in the box. 1-4 To cap off a good attacking first half display, Jack Leslie bagged his 10th goal of the season with an easy tap in at the back post. Jack had time his run to perfection and managed to evade the attention of the opposition from the corner at the same time. A pleasing goal for Coach Helmn who had been trying to get his players to make that run for months! 1-5 Edinburgh City Blacks, to their credit, continued to try and play their game despite the scoreline and got their reward after some neat play down their left hand side. A quick throw-in eluded a sleepy Callum Mannix before the winger nutmegged Jamie Stewart and was allowed a shot on goal. Jack MacMillian did well to get down and parry but again, Villa failed to react and the opposition striker was allowed an easy tap-in. Poor goal to concede from the Villa. 2-5 Soon after, Villa found themselves conceding again! Cammy White had been deemed to block the ball with his hand after turning his back on a shot. It was in the box , a penalty was awarded and converted with conviction. 3-5 H/T Despite having taken a 5-1 lead, Villa had failed to produce their best football. On a 3G surface, with little adverse weather, one would hope the Villa lads could get the ball flowing. Perhaps their recent scoreline with today’s opponents allowed an element of complacency to creep in. With the score at a close 5-3 however, there was certainly no room for complacency anymore. Villa made a couple changes at the break with Ross Douglas replacing Callum Mannix and Shaun Harrold sent on for Jack MacMillian. It didn’t take too long for the goals to get flowing once more. Lewis Mitchell won a penalty having nipped in front of the defender like a ninja who inadvertently took him out. Sam Stevenson stepped up and tucked away 5 out of 5 pens for him this season. It was a lovely penalty. Low, hard and in the corner. Never in any doubt. 3-6. Edinburgh City Black’s response however was probably the goal of the game. Their midfielder picked up the ball about 25 yards out after Villa had failed to clear. He opted to ‘have a go’ and watched the ball sail into the top corner, above a bemused Harrold. Nice goal young man. 4-6 Callum Russell had recovered a little from his difficulty in the first half and returned to the pitch to try and seal the win for Villa. He was quick to get in on the action as he latched onto a lovely through ball from Mitchell and at the second attempt, got his second of the game. 4-7 Villa conceded their last and probably sloppiest goal of the game after a cross into the back post left Ross Douglas alone with three opposition attackers. One got free and from 4 yards out, volleyed past Harrold. 5-7 The madness wasn’t over there however as with a couple minutes remaining, Scott Thomson picked up the ball after a in-the-box melee between Callum Russell and the keeper. Showing top composure, he lobbed the keeper and seal Villa’s 8th goal. 5-8 F/T Madness at both ends of the park. Villa looked clinical going forward but defensively looked very frail, leaving Coach Helmn with a bit of a headache. I managed to get a quick word with Coach Helmn after the game; “One word: Frustrating. It’s more about performances at this age than results and today, I wasn’t too pleased. I hope it’s a one off because we are going to have to be a lot better against Bonnyrigg next week!” Villa face Bonnyrigg Rose Reds FC on Sunday 24th November. 2pm kick off. Get down there and roar the boys on!! Enjoy this week’s Match Report Anthem! It’s one for real men. youtube/watch?v=ZGoWtY_h4xo
