Education system and parents . Before we blame our education system for all the problems plaguing our youths, I think it is crucial that we look at the role of parents. If parents do not spend time to teach, encourage and monitor their children, there is little that schools and teachers can do. People are quick to blame the schools and teachers but I think many Malaysian parents are not doing their part. . Of course there are so many committed parents who really nurture their children but I am concerned about the people who, in the pursuit of careers and social life, leave the responsibility of bringing up their children either to their maids or their teachers and schools. . The fundamentals have to been instilled, by parents to their children, at home. Indisciplined parents will raise indisciplined kids. Racist parents will raise racist kids. If the fundamentals are missing, there is little that schools and teachers can do. . In the ongoing discussion about our education system, I think we also need to examine whether Malaysian parents are doing enough. Focussing on schools and teachers only is simply missing the whole picture. . . p.s. I know of many many many many parents who are committed to their children’s education. They spend a lot of time with their children, going through their school work, coach them, participate in school and PTA events, etc. I also know an equal number who leave the education of their children entirely in the hands of maids, teachers and schools.
