Emotional Honesty Read Psalms 39:1 through 45:17 “If you would exercise your faith, you wouldn’t feel so bad.” “You need to claim your victory.” “This discouragement is from Satan, and it has no part in your identity as a child of God.” Well-meaning Christians offer such explanations for discouragement or depression in fellow believers. Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God (Psalm 42:5). It is true satanic influences can bring depressive feelings, but the believer should not assume that is always the case. Far more often, everyday circumstances combine with fatigue and stress to bring about negative emotions, emotions God created. The Psalmist never alludes to personal sin or to spiritual influences in this passage. Life has taken its toll, and this psalm describes a season of discouragement in a godly life. The solution? We must place our hope in God and believe He provides emotional healing. Prayer Suggestion: Pray about any discouragement you have battled recently.
