“Empowering Individuals with Disabilities through Employment” forum to be hosted by Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds DES MOINES, Iowa (August 2, 2013) - To continue a recent dialogue started by the National Governors Association, entitled “A Better Bottom Line: Employing People with Disabilities,” Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds will host an employment forum in Iowa with relevant stakeholders on October 17, 2013. The “Empowering Individuals with Disabilities through Employment” forum will showcase business leaders who effectively provide employment opportunities for Iowans with disabilities and will highlight individuals who have excelled in their careers through their employment in Iowa businesses or who have successfully started their own business in Iowa. The forum will include two stakeholder panels, as well as an opportunity for participants to informally interact and share best practices. The roundtable discussions will be led by Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds and leadership from relevant State of Iowa agencies that regularly collaborate on strategies to develop effective methods of meeting the needs of Iowa businesses and improving state agencies’ service delivery methods. Agencies include: Iowa Department on Aging; Iowa Department for the Blind; Iowa Department of Education; Iowa Department of Human Rights, Office of Persons with Disabilities; Iowa Department of Human Services; Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council; Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services; and Iowa Workforce Development. The partnership of these agencies, in coordination with the business community and stakeholders, provides system-changing initiatives that make an impact on the coordination of employment services for Iowans with disabilities. The collaboration of these agencies strive to leverage resources in effective ways to promote economic development and to implement strategies that best meet the needs of Iowa employers and our citizens. The forum will bring together business leaders, workforce development leaders and state officials to collaborate on the best strategies and methods to empower individuals with disabilities through employment and gain economic independence, ultimately helping to increase family incomes and create new jobs in Iowa.
