Enders Game - Asa Butterfield stars as the even more bizarrely named Ender Wiggin, a talented child being trained in a devastated Earth to fight an alien race that almost wiped out humanity during their first invasion. The plot is fairly familiar now, but the book this was based on was written 30 years ago and has spawned a hundred copycats, both in literature and movies, because it was so new at the time. These days less so, but what the film does well is to delve into the human motivations behind the characters. Harrison Ford plays the Commander assigned the task of finding the next General to lead all the force the human race can muster against the aliens in order to find a decisive win. The result is pushing children so far into a single way of thinking that their basic empathy and humanity becomes muted or lost. Butterfield does a tremendous job on of conveying both the effect of the training and the cost he eventually realises it has on him.
