Enjoy a beach stroll this Puja in the middle of Kolkata city. Want to feel the surging waves this Durga Puja? Or walk along the shore and admire seashells of intriguing shapes, sizes and colours? You do not need to travel to Digha or Bakkhali for that. A drive to Santoshpur is enough to give you the feel, where Santoshpur Lake Pally has come up with a theme to bring the experience of sea right in the city. The theme Teen Bhag jol, Ek bhag Lake Pally will make the pandal hoppers land amidst the sea waves. A wide variety of seashells — many of them imported from places as far as the Atlantic coast — displayed in and around the pandal will add to the ambience. Visitors will start feeling to be at the seaside right from the entrance of the pandal where they would be greeted by huge waves, said Rana Das Gupta, general secretary of Santoshpur Lake Pally Durga Puja Committee. The decorators are using 15 lakh plastic glasses for the pandal. Lighting techniques and colours would be used to produce the effects of sea wave. Major attraction in the pandal, however, would be seashells generously displayed all around, some being rare ones. While shells are being brought in from different parts of India, some exotic varieties are being imported from countries like Bali, Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, China, Sri Lanka and Australia. So there will be sea clams, abalones, murex, nacre and the spotted tiger shells and others vying for attention of the visitors. The idols, however, will be the traditional ones. But all they will be decked up with ornaments made of shells. We are hoping that the theme will attract an impressive number of visitors, added Das Gupta. The theme has been conceived by artist Sanjeev Saha. Other creative artists include Parimal Pal, Debabrata Maiti, Mayukha and Mainak. With a modest budget, the committee is banking on its creativity to pull crowd. Last year, this puja had a pandal that emerged out of a China Rose. It was quite a hit with the crowd. TNN, Aug 2014
