Enjoy the Little Things. Last Sunday was a beautiful day. We had just celebrated my niece’s baptism in Lincoln and we decided to make a quick stop at Deer Springs Winery on our way home. Chris & I sat outside with our glasses, talking, taking in the scenery and watching the girls swing. The original plan for that day was to go home and clean and get some laundry done. Chris & I decided that it wasn’t really how we wanted to spend this particular sunny Sunday. We left the winery and drove over to Elmwood where my grandpa & grandma Johnson’s old acreage was. I had not been back there since it was sold many years ago. My grandma & grandpa have passed away and they are now together in heaven, hand in hand. We turned down the familiar dirt road and drove up slowly past the trees. There it was. This place I grew up loving, laughing, running. It wasn’t just a house and some land, it was a place where time slowed and we truly enjoyed life and family. All of these memories washed over me all at once and I was overcome with emotion. Running through the old barn and chasing the ducks with my brother Catching critters in the creek with my cousins Painting tea towels and playing Chinese checkers with grandma in the hobby room Grandpa showing me all of his new creations in the wood shop Making clover necklaces & hollyhock dolls with mom Climbing the trees in the orchard Sitting on the porch and watching the peacocks wander around Playing pool in the basement Being pulled in the horse cart Making homemade ice cream Swinging on the tire swing Camping in the pasture Grandpa’s voice as he explains how to make the perfect pancake Grandma’s smile when I ask her if I can wear her Garfield shirt to bed…. again I know many of you have heard the quote “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” This is so true! These are all the small things I will never forget because they were moments filled with love. The other thing that I had noticed was that the place looked different. The red house was now a dark grey and the chain link fence around the main yard had been taken down. Chris asked me if I was sad that it had changed. No I wasn’t sad at all. It looked beautiful! Things change, life moves forward and all those amazing memories will last forever, no matter what. I was comforted to see that these homeowners taking care of a place that I will always cherish. We turned around and headed back home, and on the way Chris suddenly pulls over. Next to the road is a beautiful field full of wildflowers and butterflies. We hop out of the truck, pick some flowers and chase butterflies with our girls. We count 6 different kinds of butterflies, take some photos and Erica tries to catch them all! : ) It’s ALL about the little things. It’s a day I’ll never forget.
