Entry a-la Che Det : Breaking Bad News 1) In medical school, we were taught on how to talk to patients, especially when it comes to breaking bad news. Why? Because we may forget whatever we said to the patients, but they would remember what we say for as long as they live. Hence we were taught to choose our words wisely. 2) When we want to deliver a bad news to someone, we should first enact the scenario in our heads and put ourselves in his or her position. - avoid saying things that confuse the recipient - be honest however hard it is - dont sugar coat or tone it down - present facts, in terms which are easy to be understood - be concise, brief, but thorough - let the recipient respond, then respond accordingly - provide solutions, not more questions 3) So we have one of the worst floods in our history. I honestly dont know why but... Islamists say this is Gods wrath, or this is the final cleansing before hudud implementation. And the non-Muslims say this is Gods wrath for stealing our bibles and right to use whatever names in reference to God. People should really stop speaking on behalf of God. These statements dont provide solutions, nor do they provide moral support to the victims of the flood. They only create unnecessary tension among the people when really at these times, all hands should be working together and save our fellow citizens. These obstacles upon us are truly humbling, and make us realize how insignificant we humans are in His great universe. Instead of fighting on which religion is to blame, these incidents should be points in our history that unite Malaysian citizens as a nation. 4) To the victims of floods in East Coast, Perak, and everywhere, our prayers are with you. May The Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim save us all.
