Ephesus was located some 60 miles northeast of Patmos. its church was founded by Paul on his third missionary journey, Acts 19-20. later John became overseer after Paul was martyred. Ephesus was the biggest city in Asia Minor and later became the capitol. it was connected by highways with all other chief cities and was a great commercial center. the emperor had made it a free city and it was given the title Supreme Metropolis of Asia. it also contained one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the temple of the Roman goddess Diana, and was a center of mystical cult worship. the worship of this goddess was religious immorality at its worst.
