Ervan (Sam) Oliver Houston, 89, a longtime resident of Gabbs, Nevada passed away on December 4th at the VA Hospital in Reno, Nevada. He was the first child of eight born to Sherman and Vinnie Houston in Rockhouse, Arkansas on March 2, 1925. He spent his childhood years around the beautiful town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. When he was old enough to work, he quit school to help his parents raise his siblings during the depression. He was drafted at 18 into World War II as a member of the Army in the 36 division, 141st Company A. He earned several metals including the Sacred Purple Heart for being wounded in action. Upon his return home from the war, he met and married the love of his life, Betty Wynn. They started a family ending with four sons and two daughters. In the search of a good job, they moved their young family to Northern California from Arkansas before moving to Gabbs in 1961. He was employed at Basic Inc. as a Ball Mill operator and was a member of the Gabbs VFW Post 3677. They raised their family and remained in Gabbs until the death of Betty in 1999. Shortly after that he moved to Lovelock, Nevada. He was a kind, gentle man who loved his family dearly. He enjoyed telling them stories of his war days along with other adventures he had during his lifetime. He never lost his slow southern drawl which amused his listeners almost as much as the stories he told. Old Western Bluegrass type music was also a big part of his life and he loved to play his guitar.
