I just watched a wonderful movie, Welcome to Sarajevo, which focuses on the initial bombardment which continued until the entire city of beautiful Sarajevo and marked the onset of ethnic cleansing in the region, under the watch of the rest of Europe and Russia. At the end of the movie a concert takes place at the top of the mountain and the survivors of the city flock to the foot of the mountain to listen to a performance of the Albinoni Adagio in G Minor, arranged by Remo Giozotto, who is Albinoni most important biographer and expert. I found the movie extremely relevant and the musical concert at the end quite a moving epitaph for a City of such grandeur and cultural relevance, now rebuilt but then reduced to ashes and blood. Legend has it that there was a native Sarajevan cellist by the name of Vedran_Smailović, who dared defying the bombardment and took to the streets the Adagio, performing it nonstop for hours in an unprecedented gesture of love and hope for peace and rationality. I try as hard as I can to remain in the middle and move in whichever direction for the sake of justice and peace as I see fit to the best of my ability. Yet I know that whoever considers her or himself a friend of mine will not be indifferent to this music or to the horrific genocide that so many times have been and still is committed in the name of racism, xenophobia, women, the elderly, in sum, the vulnerable. Some of my friends flock to the left side of the same spectrum. I hope they will realize that no ideological bias can ever supersede empathy and compassion for whoever suffers.
