Esther Madudu, a Ugandan midwife who has become the face for Amref - TopicsExpress

Esther Madudu, a Ugandan midwife who has become the face for Amref Health Africas Stand Up for African Mothers campaign, recently spoke with Face2Face Africa about her commitment to bringing exposure to the challenging predicament of African Mothers and midwives. The cliché of an African woman delivering children easily is a lie. Near to half of all African women give birth alone, without aid and without care. They risk their lives giving birth. This number can reach up to 95 percent in South Sudan, a country beside mine, with one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the world. “Indeed, almost 200,000 of our women, sisters and mothers die during pregnancy or childbirth each year. And these are unfair and needless deaths – because they are due to lack of primary care and could easily be prevented!” Esther became a midwife after being curious as to why women with big stomachs came to her grandmothers house at all times of the day and night: “My grandmother, who is still alive, was a traditional birth attendant, and I saw women coming to her house with big stomachs, and I became inquisitive to find out why their stomachs were so big. What they ate! Finally, one day she allowed me to see what was coming out of the big stomach. And the rest is history! Now when Esther isnt saving lives with her facility in northern Uganda, she is touring the world speaking out on the needs of her peers, Mothers, and babies. If you support what Esther is doing, sign her petition in the article to get her nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize so that she can continue to bring awareness to the importance of African midwives in African society. Will you help???
