Ethnic cleanings done by the United States in Diego Garcia In secret the Labor government of Harold Wilson conspired with the President Johnson and Nixon administrations to sweep and sanitize Diego Garcia of 2,000 people and nearby coral islands that are part of the Chagos Archipelago. Sweep and sanitize are the exact words used in American documents. In January 1966, a British Foreign Office official wrote that the aim is to convert all the existing residents ... into short-term, temporary residents. In other orders, migrant workers and not indigenous people. In August 1966, Sir Paul Gore-Booth, permanent undersecretary at the Foreign Office, wrote: The object of the exercise was to get some rocks that will remain ours. There will be no indigenous population except seagulls. In 1971, the last remaining people were loaded on to ships, allowed to take only one suitcase. They left behind their homes and furniture, and their lives. They were put on a boat and taken 1,200 miles away to the slums of Mauritius, where they were left on the docks, with no money and to fend for themselves. They were given abandon and ransacked buildings with no water or sewers. In a British Foreign Office secret memo was discovered evidence of the covered up this ethnic cleaning. The memo reads, “ There is a civilian population, I would advise a policy of quite disregard. In other words, let’s forget about this one until the United Nations challenge us on it.” And the British UN Ambassador lied to the UN General Assembly, saying that island of Diego Garcia was uninhabited when the British acquired it. Only after more than a decade did they receive any compensation from the British government: less than £3,000 each, which did not cover their debts. David Vine, an assistant professor of anthropology at American University and author of Island of Shame: the Secret History of the U.S. Military on Diego Garcia says they would be happy to live on the unused eastern portion of the island and work at the base but the US instead “imports (hires) contract labor from other areas so they can send them home when the job is done.” The island’s exiled survivors and their descendants today number about 5,000. The US became guilty to conspiracy to do ethnic cleanings when it secretly lease of the island. But the Blair government invoked the Royal Prerogative and the Queen decried that the indigenous people would not be allowed back onto the island. The British High Count replied to the Queens decree that her action was repugnant.
