Etna 15/3/2014 Some facts : Europes largest active volcano dominating the whole of eastern Sicily. Emerging 2 million years ago from the ocean Etna or Montgibello from the Italian monte and the Arab Gobel both meaning mountain. Etna is considered a relatively recent addition to the volcano family. Most recent eruptions were in 2001 and 2002, which we saw Lava flow caused damage to rifugio sapienza destroying the ski facility and cable car, 2002, we saw this firsthand and photoes from our guide. The breakdown of volcanic material supports the fertile land which results in almonds olives grape citrus and vegetables, hence the amazing colour, size and taste of the fresh produce we are experiencing here. I think that is why the pastries are so slimming Eruptions in the central crater are rare but frequent in the side vents which creates smaller secondary cones, which we saw, walked in and looked down a vent Currently the summit is 3320 m, we went to 2000 m, currently because of activity the highest you can go is 2500 m. The last few ski seasons have not been good, we still experienced good snow to walk in today The largest village on North eastern slope is Linguaglossa our guides village which was spectacular. Name derives from 17 century lave flow that was called Linguaglossa the big tongue. Town streets are lava.
