Eureka! One of the things that Ive been having frustration with is the medallions on my costume. Theyre incredibly flat, though Im glad I Found a way to keep them from looking like blocky wheels. Looking at pictures of Thors costume, there are a few details that Ive been wanting to create. 1: Curvature. Theres a distinct bulbous effect with the medallions that keep them from being simply flat. 2: Rivets. I missed this on my first run on the costume, but Ive made up for it on my wrist braces. As for the medallions, theres ten rivets evenly spaced within each medallion. 3: Rim. around the edge of the medallion theres a lip that separates the inside from the vest. 4: some kind of swirly design. I cant tell if its a twisty celtic knot design like the vest is or if its just a random pattern created for the costume. But its there and its REALLY shallow. As is the case with HD films and modern high production budget films, theres almost no limit to the details you can fit into a costume, prop, or vehicle. The more detail you add, even if its just a series of tiny dots on a disc, its just one more element that adds production value to the final product. Unfortunately this makes recreating the costume that much more difficult. Im not going to bother with the swirly design for this run. Its too complex and too shallow for me to justify creating it with my skill level. Just... NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE. The rivets, as already mentioned, were easily replicated on my arm bands. Im going to do the same thing I did with those (Superglue these iron-on dot things I found at Wal-Mart). The curvature and the rim are the things I havent been able to figure out... until now. I didnt want to fake the curve effect by molding it myself or something (Yet). I dont think I could have gotten enough symmetry to justify it. I realized I just needed something pre-shaped, even if it was hollow. One visit to Wal-Mart later (Its literally in my backyard for now, theres no way Im not taking advantage of that) and 1.74 dollars down, I bought an inflatable rubber ball, cut that sucker open, and cut me out some medallions in the size I needed. since its a soft rubber it flops around, so Im filling them with wood glue and craft foam to give them structure and stability. Theyre drying at the moment, so I dont know if this is going to totally work just yet. If it does, hurrah for me! If it doesnt, Im down like 2 dollars worth of materials. The other thing is the lip that forms the rim. I think the closest Ill get to making that is using craft foam to form it and try to create a slight curve with some woodglue and gesso. If the experiment works tonight, Ill have new boots and new medallions to add to the costume before Comicon. Im pretty excited.
