Even in the late B.C.s and early A.D.s (in all of recorded history actually) there was poverty due to income inequality, unfair taxes, the powerful taking advantage of the poor, keeping all the money for themselves. Why do you think Jesus crashed the money lenders at the temple... etc etc, this isnt a new phenomenon. The problem is complacency and willful ignorance, and the powerful taking advantage of and encouraging ignorance, willful and otherwise.
