Even in the most successful preservation efforts, the forces of change are inevitable and persistent. The end of the year might have you looking back over old photographs to recall events, see what changed, and find what remains the same. At the Park Cultural Landscapes Program, we also use photos as one way to document changing landscape characteristics and condition. This month, weve shared Then & Now views of cultural landscapes around the country. Perhaps there is no better reminder of the continuity of change than the passing of the seasons. These images of Koslowskis Trading Post complex, a cultural landscape in Pecos National Historical Park, were each taken around 2000. The pasture has a different appearance after just a few months. A visitor to the landscape is able to see remaining physical traces of the Santa Fe Trail and the ranch era, as well as seasonal changes that influence the landscapes appearance. Capturing this array of change in photographs is a reminder of what passes and what continues to be present, year after year.
