Even the first seconds of the ENTIRE series offers a suggestion that theres no way The Mother could be dead in 2030 (when the story is being told). Heres the opening sequence: Future Ted: Kids, Im going to tell you an incredible story. The story of how I met your mother. Luke (son): Are we being punished for something? Future Ted: No. Penny (daughter): Yeah is this gonna take awhile? Future Ted: Yes. Now if she were dead at this point in time, dont you think their reactions would be a bit different? And Im not buying that was just a continuity error on the part of Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. This series has relied so much on accuracy in terms of continuity, no way they would screw it up from the get-go.
