“Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 9/11.” –President Barack Obama, 2011 At 8:46 a.m. on this day 13 years ago, our nation was forever changed. We will never forget the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001. Today, we honor the 2,977 people who lost their lives on 9/11 and we remember their families who will never be the same. In the midst of evil on that day, we also saw the best of humanity. We will never forget those who asked themselves “If Not Me, Then Who…” and put the safety of others before their own. Today, we remember the heroes who emerged to help others- both first responders and civilians. We honor the men and women who answered the call to serve and protect our country in the aftermath, and we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. In the wake of 9/11, we remained strong and resolute. We saw Americans across the country embody a spirit of selflessness and unity- a spirit that defined our nation in the coming days, weeks and years. On this national day of remembrance and service, please join us in keeping that spirit alive. We believe that the best way to honor the fallen is by challenging the living. Challenge yourself to make a difference, to serve your community, or to help someone else today, and every day. Together, we can show the world that 13 years later, we are still strong, we are still united, and we will NEVER FORGET. God bless America.
