Evening News 5.10.13 Protest in Brazil Continues Nearly 1,500 Indigenous Peoples (IP) from across Brazil occupied a central road in the federal capital Brasília, known as the Esplanade of Ministries this week, to stop legislative assaults that threaten to undermine or extinguish IP rights across the country. The group paralysed traffic in both directions in their bid to prevent proposed amendments to the constitution, that would, amongst other things give the Senate power to approve processes of demarcation of Indigenous lands, permit the possession of IP land by rural producers, allow mining on IP lands without permission and permit the use of military force against any IP who oppose large scale projects like hydroelectric dams. Prior to occupying the Esplanade of Ministries, the diverse group of protesters in Brasília, who represent more than one hundred ethnicities in a group called APIB attempted to enter the National Congress. The Indigenous Peoples were met with pepper spray and during the confrontation, APIB reported that one Tupiniquim participant was wounded deeply enough in the arm to require hospitalization intercontinentalcry.org/brazil-indigenous-peoples-occupy-esplanade-20268/
