Ever notice how Robin Williams best roles are where he understands - TopicsExpress

Ever notice how Robin Williams best roles are where he understands a young person whos locked up inside some self-destructive behavior or expectations and helps them escape that hell? In Good Will Hunting, he helps an emotionally stunted defensive genius escape the stubborn wall that he built as a last line of defense against an abusive foster care system. Kind of like the wall of humor he used to prevent himself from having to be real about himself. In Dead Poets Society, he tries to help young students escape the rigid expectations of them. Like the expectation to make his mother laugh because it was the only praise he got from either of his parents. Its a paradox... he understands people so that he can get them to like him while simultaneously locking himself into the role of the clown to hide from the risk of being real with them. Robin Williams played best the person he was seeking in his own life.
