Ever wonder why WIC provides specific foods to WIC families? Each WIC food package contains supplemental foods that meet the nutrition needs of pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women and infants and children up to 5 years. WIC is not intended to be the main source of food for WIC families, instead the selected foods help to address important nutrition needs of a mom and her children during growth and development. In 2009 the food packages were updated to ensure WIC provides the same healthy foods that are outlined in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and to also follow current infant feeding practice guidelines as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
