Every artiste needs knowledge of classical music –MUSON director Director and teacher at the MUSON School of Music, Mrs. Marion Akpata, has said that the knowledge of classical music will help artistes to excel in their chosen genres. Akpata noted this ahead of the 2014 edition of the MUSON Festival, which is scheduled to start on Thursday. According to her, the knowledge of music generally aids people to do well in any field. She said, “Once you have studied music, you can do anything you like with it. Music is music. If you are trained in the classical genre, you can do any other type of music. To enhance our visual art, we need music. Music is so much part of our lives.” Speaking on the activity of the MUSON School of Music, Akpata noted that her experience and the feedback she was getting indicated that the scholars had been doing well in various areas. In reference to the theme of the festival – Coming of Age – she said, “As far as our contribution to music in Nigeria is concerned, we have come of age. Our graduates are now in key positions in schools, churches and other places of performance. I have seen them at the Lagos Jazz Festival and other events. So, I think coming of age and nothing else demonstrates what has been recorded in the school.” Akpata said a major highlight of the youth concert coming as part of the festival is a competition that will reward each winner in the Best Vocalist and Best Instrumentalist categories with N150,000 each. The 2014 MUSON Festival opens on Thursday, October 16 with the popular ‘My Kind of Music’ where select eminent Nigerians will relate their experiences in the music of their choices. These are former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku; former Nigerian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo Dosumu; scholar and university administrator, Emeritus Professor Ayo Banjo and former Federal Minister of Housing, Lands and Urban Development, Chief Mobolaji Osomo. While the festival drama, the late Cyprian Ekwensi’s ‘Jagua Nana-the Musical’ will be staged on Saturday, October 18, other features include a visual art exhibition, a dance workshop and a series of concerts. ift.tt/1vamgaE ift.tt/1vamgaA [[Boost your social presence with NAIRALIKES nairalikes ]] #nigeria x #nairalikes #vanguardng
