Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.” (Romans 13:1) Jesus told us to render to Caesar that which is Caesar’s. We are not to rebel against normal government when they operate for the good of the people. Yes, there are times, discerned through the Holy Spirit, to protest, but the church faithful has always been cautious, seeking to be honorable and render to authority. We are to respect authority and not be as those who do not know Christ and rebel, cheat, and seek to defy authority. Lord, I know You are sovereign, but You ask that I also submit to earthly authorities. Sometimes that is difficult. Teach me by the example of the saints to live faithfully in this world in which You have placed me that I may learn proper submission to authority. Keep me in the right balance between Your authority and the state’s authority that I may be submissive, but not sinful. Lord, guide my thoughts today that I may live according to Your Word. Help me submit to the proper authority, knowing that You are King of kings and Lord of lords. Help me reflect that respect so that it is obvious and gives witness that all of Your Word is fit for practice in the daily life of the believer. Regardless of the authority I meet today, help me be respectful and deferential for Your sake. Amen.
