Every society has some nasty stuff going on. Always has, actually, and always will. Its a disappointing part of human nature that world peace is but a pipe dream until the sun explodes, or the ecosystem collapses, or something equally pleasant finally blankets the planet in complete and irreversible silence. But if thats all you choose to focus on, then youre really missing out. Youre missing out on the sporadic kindness of strangers, and unexpected gifts from loved ones. Youre missing out on laughing about ridiculous animal hi-jinks with fellow canine fans at the dog park, and swaying in a human wave at a concert. Youre missing out on making your own honest and positive impact on just one persons life, if only for a day or even a moment, because youd rather dwell on how much you hate your own species. Obviously, theres absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be informed with whats going on in the world. In fact, thats pretty awesome, because to not keep up is to also miss out on a whole-lot-of-everything. But just keep in mind: while you cant fix everything, while theres so much out of your hands and theres plenty to rage about, its not selfish or ignorant to close out a website, or turn off the TV because youre over-saturated with negativity. Go call up an old friend, or your mother, or just go out of your way to be nice to someone just because you can. The very girl who says humans will inevitably destroy each other also refuses to give up on them. For every bomb that goes off, every murder, every reason to list humanity as a lost cause-- I just think thats all more the reason to to be the best person that you can. Dont miss out on how good you have it, and how much good you can do, even if those clouds are darkening the horizons. Storms will always happen, but they also always pass. /sappyrant
